Thornley - Tow Law - Sunniside - Low Harperley
A walk in the rolling countryside bordered by Tow Law to the north, Crook to the east and the River Wear to the south. There are some great panoramic views on the walk, particularly from the highest point, on the outskirts of Tow Law.
The walk starts from the end of the road in the village of Thornley, just south of Tow Law. The route heads north through fields that are steep at times to emerge onto the outskirts of Tow Law. Pavement-walking then follows along a high ridge with great panoramic walks of the surrounding countryside before the walk arrives at Sunniside. A series of unsurfaced lanes follows as the route passes by an area that was until very recently a huge opencast mine. The walk then passes through a horseracing gallop, after which there is a little road-walking albeit on very quiet roads that reveal good views. A couple of main roads are crossed before the walk descends along lanes and through fields to intersect Old Harperly Hall and farm at the lowest point of the walk. From here the route crosses another main road before making the climb up through several grassy fields back to Thornley.
