Road, lane and field-walking make up this circular walk in the mid-Durham rolling countryside just south of the River Wear. The easy to follow route passes through the charming village of Hamsterley, then visits the beautifully preserved 15th Century Witton Castle and grounds.
The walk starts with a relatively flat section that descends to a small valley before rising to the elevated village of Hamsterley, where there are good views of the surrounding countryside. The route then makes its way down to the River Wear before a final ascent of a leafy lane to Witton Castle and finally through a series of fields to arrive back into Toft Hill. The walk is a mixture of roads, fields and lanes. Most of the road-walking is along roads without pavements. Some areas of the fields can be wet or muddy after prolonged rain, making the best time to do the walk either in the summer or in mid-winter when the ground is hard with frost.
