The walk starts from the car park and picnic area on the site of the long-gone Waskerley Station House, located high up on the moors alongside the Waskerley Way railway path. From the car park the walk follows the well-maintained path as it climbs very gradually through wild, heather-covered moorland up to the highest point of the walk at Weather Hill, passing on the way the reservoirs of Smiddy Shaw on the right and Waskerley on the left. From here the walk starts to descend the long Weatherhill incline towards the picturesque valley of Weardale. At Crawley Edge the descent becomes steeper as it traverses a bracken-covered hillside before passing through old mine workings to emerge into the market town of Stanhope.
