A great, mainly moorland walk from Hury Reservoir in Balderdale. The circular walk explores the moors between Baldersdale and Deepdale, with superb panoramic views of the hills in this south-eastern part of the North Pennines. Most of the route is very easy to follow on clear tracks, but there is a mile-long section across rough moorland where the use of a map and compass is essential.
The walk starts from the Hury Reservoir car park and heads south initially through farming land before entering the Open Access Land of Cotherstone Moor. The route rises steadily as it passes through the deep gully of the How Beck before walking around the perimeter wall of an MOD firing range to arrive at the highest point of the walk at Ladyfold Rigg. The route then leaves the Open Access Land for a very gradual descent along a farm track that presents great views of the surrounding countryside. A little undulating road-walking then follows, after which the route traverses rough open moorland where there is no clear track to follow. The walk then intersects a surfaced moorland road for a delightful descent to the farming hamlet of Briscoe. The final flat short section is through a series of small meadows before arriving back at the reservoir car park.
