The walk leaves Westgate up a minor road and rises quite steeply at times before levelling off along lanes and fields that offer up great views up and down the dale. The route then passes through a huge Aggregate quarry complex after which you join an old mineral railway line that leads you gently up through a variety of terrains onto the open moor to the highest point of the walk. Shortly after, as the route starts its descent towards Rookhope, you leave the railway path and descend through fields to intersect the Rookhope Valley. The route then descends the valley mainly following the Rookhope Burn before arriving into the village of Eastgate.
From here the walk crosses the River Wear and travels along a mostly flat side road with barely any traffic that takes you to the hamlet of Brotherlee where the route then re-crosses the River Wear and passes through a variety of terrain as it roughly follows the river back to Westgate.
