A walk in Upper Weardale from the village of Westgate up onto Middlehope Moor, to the north of this delightful dale. A picturesque descent off the moor then leads you back down to the valley floor to intersect the upper reaches of the River Wear, where the route picks-up the Weardale Way long-distance path as it follows the river downstream back to Westgate.
From the village of Westgate in the valley the route rises quite steeply at times through fields and along a lane to intersect the wall-enclosed byway called Seeingsike Road. A minor surfaced road and a wall-enclosed bridleway then takes you up to Race Head, the highest point of the walk. A scenic descent off the moor followed by a little road-walking returns you to the floor of the valley. The remainder of the walk is totally flat as you meander along riverside paths, along lanes and through meadows, following the route of the Wear back to Westgate.
