A mainly field-walk in the mildly undulating area at the eastern approach to Weardale. The route also includes some lane- and road-walking, although on roads that carry very little traffic. This is a walk probably better suited to the summer months; alternatively, if mud does not faze you then this is the walk for you during the wetter months of the year.
The walk starts from almost the lowest point at Witton-le-Wear and rises on a metalled road before taking to the fields on its way to the western fringe of Crook. From here easy road and field-paths deliver you to the highest point of the walk, with good views looking up the beautiful valley of Weardale. The route then starts the gradual descent back towards the River Wear along a wide bridleway that passes through a paint-balling centre, after which field-walking takes you to Low Harperley Hall where the route meets the Weardale Way. The walk then follows this route as it passes along farm tracks and through fields, crossing the Weardale Heritage Railway twice before arriving back into Witton le Wear.
