An easy to follow walk that offers the opportunity to experience the splendour and isolation of a superb North Pennines moor without needing the navigational skills that are normally required when walking the fells. This is an outstanding walk from Wolsingham that heads up onto Pikeston Fell for a 3.3-mile meander around the captivating moor before returning back to the valley floor for the final lap that pretty much follows the Weardale Valley Heritage Railway line and sections of the River Wear back to Wolsingham.
From Wolsingham the route crosses both the River Wear and the Weardale Heritage Railway line then starts the long pull up lanes and through fields on the southern slopes of the dale to arrive onto Pikeston Fell. A panoramic walk follows as the route initially passes along the northern edge of the Fell then heads south, deep into the huge fell for a glorious walk on this most magnificent of northern grouse moors, all the while on easy-to-follow wide stony shooters tracks. The route then leaves the fell for a long descent down through fields on a surfaced track to arrive into the hamlet of White Kirkley. Field and lane walking then takes you down to the River Wear in the valley bottom as the walk skirts the village of Frosterley for the final totally flat lap that mainly follows the Heritage Railway Line back to Wolsingham.
