Do not forget your camera on this outstanding walk through Upper Teesdale. The dale is a magnet for walkers and the upper end of the dale where this walk takes place is no exception, for as well as the scenic track through the hills on the north side of the valley the route alongside the River Tees is outstanding, particularly the area of the river upstream of Bowlees that includes the impressive Low Force group of waterfalls.

The walk starts from the Bowlees Visitor Centre car park and heads down the dale through fields and lanes on the lower slopes of the hills on the north side of the valley before the final outward section of the route intersects the capital of the dale at Middleton-in-Teesdale where the walk crosses the River Tees. The route then heads upstream following the river to a point midway between Low Force and High Force where you recross the river over the Holwick Head footbridge. After a little field- and lane-walking the route returns to Bowlees on a delightful descending scenic track with great views looking down the dale.

Before you cross Holwick Head footbridge at Waymark 24 why not consider taking a short diversion from the route to view the legendary High Force waterfall, a little over half a mile further upstream; you will not regret it.
