The old market town of Burton-in-Kendal is more of a large village these days but makes a very pleasant base for a day out. Even though there had been a belated outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease a few days before our long planned visit, we were able to adapt the walk to use the quiet lanes of the area with the paths that were still open. The disused Lancaster canal is full of wildlife and gives good views of the Lake District.

Some updates. WP8 ignore. Just before track inclines to canal bridge there is now a path on the left to the towpath. WP9 Now a gate. WP8-WP11 significant motorway noise. WP16 Now that footpaths available, alternative return is:- Go right downhill for 100 yds or so. Look on rh side of road for fp sign to left opposite wooden door in wall. Go through door and find concrete track beyond barns. Follow that back into town. (At crossing track go downhill between hedges)

I disagree with Brian's comment - I've walked in this area several times and although the M6 is audible (naturally, it is close by) it doesn't distract from the great views and the road through Burton wasn't too busy on the occasions we've walked along it. The part along the canal is quiet too.

This walk is far from tranquil. The background noise from the M6 is never far away and parts of the walk are along a busy road.
