After leaving the village of Chalton with its very pretty thatched pub, the walk takes you along the crest of the downs with far-reaching, wonderful views, on a clear day as far as The Solent and the Isle of Wight. Then the route drops down to the 'church in the field', St Hubert's, dated 1083AD and with 14th Century wall paintings. Continuing on fairly level ground, this walk passes through fields with well-maintained grassy paths. There is a short, sharp climb back up Chalton Down, but you are swiftly rewarded with yet more lovely views of Hampshire's soft country downland.
Those of you with dogs may find it useful to know that my dog, a fit, slim Labrador who cannot jump, managed all the stiles with ease.
