An enjoyable hike across Eggleston Common and through the eastern part of Hamsterley Forest. The varied route includes a moorland road and both rough and easy fell-walking, as well as a long section through the huge Hamsterley Forest on good wide stony tracks.
The walk starts with a long walk down a quiet moorland road before the route rises steeply onto the vast Eggleston Common, where the route intersects a remote shooters' hut. Rough walking through knee-length heather follows as the route then descends the southern slope of the moor to intersect a clear track that takes the walker into the huge Hamsterley Forest. A long walk through the forest on wide forest roads follows before the route leaves the forest and enters a deep-sided gulley as the walk rises gently to return to the car-parking area.
