This is a very easy to follow walk that starts from the Weardale village of Frosterley and rises up the southern slopes of the dale to arrive onto Pikeston Fell. The next 5.5 miles of the route are spent roaming the fell on clear wide shooters tracks before the route descends off the moor to arrive into the valley of the Bollihope Burn in the hamlet of Bollihope. A fairly short, but steep route out of the valley then takes you through the small, lofty village of Hill End for a pleasant descent through fields back into Frosterley.

From Frosterley high street the walk heads along the lanes between the houses and the river to leave the village over the recently restored footbridge over the River Wear. The route then briefly keeps company with the river before heading south to make the climb up a lane and through fields to arrive onto the Open Access Land of Pikeston Fell. A magnificent panoramic walk then follows past the local landmark of the Elephant Trees as the track hugs the northern edge of the fell.

The route then follows shooters tracks across the open moor that passes several grouse shooting butts before the walk descends steeply at times into the valley of the Bollihope Burn. A picturesque riverside ramble follows through the valley before the route heads steeply uphill through the hamlet of Bishopley to intersect the village of Hill End.

From here is all downhill as the route descends through steep pastures to arrive back into Frosterley.
