The walk description starts from the Garden Centre in Grasmere. Turn left on leaving the building and follow the lane past the lake and up the steep climb over Red Bank. At the top of the rise take the right fork, passing the youth hostel and then follow the lane down, forking left to drop into Great Langdale. In a few minutes the Wainwright Inn is passed and further up the valley, the Old Dungeon Ghyll Hotel and then the New Dungeon Ghyll.
A left turn leads to the steep climb by Blea Tarn House and the descent into Little Langdale. Another left turn at the junction with the Wrynose Pass road brings you to the Three Shires Inn. Further down the valley, a left turn leads to Elterwater (and the Brittania) and to the foot of Red Bank. One final climb leads back to Grasmere.
