An excellent walk over moorland, mainly on paths and tracks but with a little pathless terrain. There are fascinating old smelting mill workings reached by a miners' track and an interesting river crossing.

The walk starts in the small village of Gunnerside and progresses over reasonably well-defined paths and tracks to reach a river crossing, which was easily forded when we did it in June but could possibly prove more difficult if the river was in full spate. There is an alternative bridge in this case.

The old lead smelting mill and workings on the top of the moor are fascinating and do not detract in any way from the glorious scenery in this part of the Dales.

Delighted to inform that the Kings Head pub in Gunnerside has re-opened after a two year closure. It's open all day from 12 noon and serves excellent lunch and dinner choices www.kingsheadgunnerside.com

Have completed this walk on 2 occasions now, it is an excellent walk with open moorland ruined lead mines and fantastic scenery. Navigation can be tricky as one or two of the paths are not clear but with the help of a gps device the route is easier to find. Overall an excellent walk with fantastic scenery well worth the effort.
