A very easy to follow walk through Hamsterley Forest and across Hamsterley Common. Most of the forest-walking is on well-signposted, wide, stony forest tracks with clear tracks for the remainder. The route on Hamsterley Common is also easy to follow, walking with the addition of superb 180-degree views from the west through the north and down to the coast at Teesside in the east.

The walk starts from the Grove Car Park located in the centre of the forest, followed by a long gradual climb on a wide, stony forest track up to one of the highest points of the walk, where several tracks meet. The route then descends to cross the Euden Beck in the valley floor. From here the route starts the steady rise through the forest to Black Hill, where the route leaves the forest to enter Hamsterley Common. The easy walking down the common presents great views up through County Durham and around to the east coast. The route re-enters the forest at Potato Hill with a nice lane-walk back to the car park.
