Here is a bracing ten-miler from the greystone village of Keld over the moors for refreshments in 'Britain's Highest Inn' (Tan Hill) at 1,732ft. This first part of the walk follows the Pennine Way through classic Swaledale sheep-farming country.

Descend across the fells and then walk via an attractive river valley back to Keld. There's no pub in Keld but you can obtain teas at the farm beside the car park and there's a very good hotel and restaurant (Keld Lodge).

I went to the pub twice last year and the food/service was very good

We understand Tan Hill is up for sale at present - let's hope for better times ahead!

Word of warning about the Tan Hill Inn. I have been there twice now, both times the staff were unhelpfull and unfriendly. The food is poor quality and over priced. It also take forever to get served. We were first to order when they eventually started taking food orders and it still took over 30 mins for 2 sandwiches to arrive. If you do this walk take a packed lunch!!!
