Ravensworth - Kirby Hill - Gayles - Dalton - Ravensworth

You will not be disappointed with this lovely little circular walk in the area around the Holmedale Valley in the picturesque most northerly part of North Yorkshire, where the flat, arable farmlands rise to meet the foothills of the North Pennines.

The route starts from the attractive village of Ravensworth with its large open village green, passing the remains of the 12th Century Ravensworth Castle before ascending through fields to intersect the old village of Kirby Hill, with its great scenic outlook. This lovely old village features a tight little quadrangle of houses surrounding a village green and overlooked by a delightful old church dating from the end of the 14th Century. From here the route makes a gradual ascent along glorious lanes and fields to reach the highest point of the walk, on the fringes of the MoD firing ranges where there are outstanding panoramic views looking to the right up into the vast southern reaches of County Durham.

The walk then starts to descend through heath, woodland and fields to arrive at the charming village of Gayles. Further undulating field-walking takes you to the glorious meandering, wooded gorge of Throstle Gill, through which runs the tumbling stream of the Dalton Beck before emerging into the attractive village of Dalton. The terrain from here levels out for the pleasant walk through fields and finally alongside a crystal-clear stream to return to Ravensworth. This easy to follow route includes only a very small amount of walking on surfaced roads.
