This walk is to the limestone Pennine area to the east of Shap rather than to the more familiar Lakeland fringe that I have described in other walks. It follows the Coast to Coast walk out of the village, crossing first the railway and then the M6 before reaching open countryside with wide views not only of Lakeland but of the Pennines further north and into Scotland. There are easily followed grass tracks and a quarry track before the Coast to Coast walk is met again and followed back to the village. It is an area not frequently walked as there are so many obvious attractions to explore first, but it should be on every walker's list as a follow-up.
