Newlands Corner is a popular site with superb views of the countryside. This is open chalk downland with peaceful woodlands. Silent Pool and Sherbourne Pond at the start of the walk are magical places to go. Netherlands Wood is tranquil, with well-defined paths (some may be slippery or muddy during wetter times). There are interesting trees, exposed chalkland, a pill-box and a disused water tower along the way. Easy, well-defined pathways make this a pleasant and rewarding woodland walk, great at any time but especially so during spring and summer.

We would advise that this walk may not be suitable for those with small children due to the need to cross fast busy roads in three places.

Walked 29.07.2023, with slight modifications made to the route due to previous blocked paths; all now correct as of July 2023. The walk remains a good one to test agility, you certainly will feel it after the initial climb. Some of the paths were a little overgrown as of July 2023 but no problems passing by, would highly recommend walking poles as you'll need them for the ascent and descent as this part is very slippery underfoot. Once past the initial climb, the walk is mostly flat through woodland so this is a great walk when the sun is beating down as you will be shaded. Newlands corner is a lovely place to unwind and grab a breather and refreshments at the cafe. Walk is around 4.81 miles and moderate (although the start feels like a mountain challenge!)

We have updated the walk as of October 2020 so all should be correct.

Lovely walk, with one work of warning - almost all of the 205m of elevation gain are in the first third of a mile! Once my lungs a d legs had recovered, the rest of the walk was very enjoyable over gently undulating ground on top of the downs. Although my knees aren't too keen when it came to taking the steep track back down. At 1, the paths either side of silent pool have been closed. Instead, turn left up some steps and then right on the track by the vineyard, which brings you to point 2. At 3, the stile has gone and the oath has been hardcore's as there is forestry work ongoing. The clearing has therefore gone! But keep heading straight on to get to the house at point 4. Rest of the walk was straightforward albeit busy around newlands corner - my fault for going at Easter weekend! Just off the silent pool car park is Albury vineyard and silent pool gin distillery, if you feel the need for some booze to take home afterwards!

There is a slightly more scenic return from way-mark 16 to the car park at the Silent pool via the bridle path to the top of Water Lane and the footpath to the entrance the gas station and then across the A25 to the Car Park. If you would like photographs and directions of the updates I would be pleased to up date it. The distance is about the same. Regards Steve Moore

The footpaths around the silent pool are currently closed but there is a link to the other footpath via some new steps. A hard climb to start but worth it really enjoyed it. The footpaths between way-marks 7 and 12 are badly overgrown with brambles so had to find ways around. The bridleways are clear and well used. Thanks Steve Moore

Thank you Norman, for the new route avoiding the busy road section. New photos and route directions are now incorporated.

After recovering from the ascent from Silent Pool, this is a very pleasant walk. The directions are generally very good and there is a lot of additional useful information. (Note - no sign of a Teepee on the ascent from Silent Pool. Presumably this was a temporary structure.)
