Ullswater - Gowbarrow Fell - Aira Force - Ulcat Row Circular Walk

An enjoyable walk with contrasting features at various points, starting near Little Mell Fell, passing Priest's Crag and Little Meldrum with views of northern Ullswater, through a mature pine plantation with further glimpses of Ullswater, spectacular views of Ullswater from the slopes of Gowbarrow Fell (at one point about 85% of the length of the lake can be viewed) and visiting Aira Force, with refreshment facilities and waterfalls.

The walk then passes near Dockray in Matterdale, continues around the foot of Gowbarrow Fell towards Little Mell Fell, going trough the tiny hamlet of Ulcat Row and down towards Watermillock, completing the circle near Watermillock Church.

We bought this walk as we were staying at Ullswater for a 60th birthday celebration. Found the starting point OK and there was a set back area that takes about 4 cars. Followed the walk exactly until approaching the Aira Force section. As we had already been there, we did a short cut around that section. It was strange, going to the top of Gowbarrow we never saw anyone. But going down the other side, we saw lots of people coming from the opposite direction. Very enjoyable 60th birthday on a lovely day, Thank you.

The first two thirds of this route are a lovely walk with beautiful views. An alternative return route is to take the path to right, signposted Gowbarrow, at grid ref 399215, between waymarks 10 and 11. The path is not marked on the map but follows the wall going approximately north east from that point all the way to 412221, where both path and wall turn right to rejoin the walk at way point 3 from where you can walk back to the start. The path is very clear. There is a spectacular 360 degree panorama from the top of Gowbarrow Fell - a fantastic view for such a low fell. Although this route does involve retracing your steps for some of the way, it does avoid the road walking and the section through the woods is so delightful that a second visit is no penance.
